Classmates - Rules and Guidelines

The following is an example of how each listing will be displayed on the website...

(Picture if any)(College Logo(s))Last Name, First Name -- Location of Residence;  e-mail address;  "biographical information"  (date of addition;  date of last update)

Doe, John -- Corpus Christi, TX;  johndoe@johndoe.com;  "Hi everyone.  I am doing well.  E-mail me if you like."  (added 10/01/04;  updated 11/09/04)

Below are rules and guidelines for each section of a listing.  Each is described as best as possible.  Any other issues not addressed below can be discussed in a private manner.  Please e-mail me any questions and/or concerns and they will be handled accordingly and promptly.  Likewise, if anyone has an issue with your respective listing, by all means please bring it to my attention.  Otherwise, thanks to everyone who chooses to be listed in the Classmates section.  It's great to have y'all aboard!  -- Michael

Re:  Schools and Class Years

My train of thought is this ... if you were a part of a class year of a school at any point, you can be listed in that school and year.  Meaning, if you started Carroll for your freshman year, but then your family moved, then you are cool to be a part of that class listing.  That's probably the most extreme case though.  If you went to a school for a year or two, but then for some reason didn't finish at that school, then of course you can be listed for that year.  If you went to a school, but then transferred to a different school and graduated from that one, then it is up to you if you would like to be included in both.  Currently, there is one person on the site that went to Carroll for just over two years, and then transferred to Ray for the last year and a half.  That person is listed in both schools because they did their time in each school.

Re:  Pictures

Everyone is invited to include a picture for her/her respective listing.  The picture will be cropped to a head shot.  Since each picture is shown in a 100x131 pixel space, head shots are the only pose that look appropriate.  Anything more would be overkill for a small picture space.  Sooo ... any picture you send will be cropped to ONLY include your face in a 100x131 pixel shot.

Pictures of couples are welcomed from those who are currently married ONLY.  Forgive me, but people break up all the time.  To me, it makes more sense to only include a couple shot for those who are seriously committed (i.e. - married).  Couple shots will be cropped to include both faces at 175x131 pixels.  You don't have to include a picture of your spouse, but it is welcomed should you choose to.

Re:  College Logos:

I am leaving this item to each person's discretion.  In my opinion, college logos should be limited to where a degree was achieved, where you are currently enrolled, or where you spent half or more of your collegiate career.  At the very least, I would hope that one spent a year of more at the requested college.  However, I recognize that only you can truly gauge how connected you feel to your requested logo.  Therefore, if you request a certain logo(s), I will post it with no problem.

Re:  Names

Your first and last name will be displayed, hopefully exactly as was in your respective high school yearbook.  Nicknames are welcomed to be displayed.  However, please be reasonable with any requests.  I mean, if people really call you something different from your given name, then no problem.  If you are recognized by something other than your given them, then okay.  But if you were called something once in your life, c'mon guys!  Also, if your "nickname" is but a smaller version of your name ... I think you know where I am going with this.  It isn't exactly necessary to write William "Will", Gabriel "Gabe", or Michael "Mike".  So please only include a nickname if people REALLY call you it or especially if it references a middle name.

Re:  Locations:

This is all you.  Wherever you call home will be what is posted.

Re:  E-mail addresses:

I think the whole point of the Classmates section is to no only have a place to read up on people, but more importantly to provide a way for people to reconnect with you.  E-mail addresses will be posted for everyone, unless you let me know otherwise.  I will be more than happy to leave yours off should you want it that way, but you must let me know.  Otherwise, I assume everyone to understand that all listings will include a posted e-mail address.  Please keep me up-to-date with your most current address as anything otherwise would defeat the purpose.

Re:  Biographical Information:

Again, this is all up to you.  You are free to write anything you like about yourself in this section.  It can be serious or comical.  I do not change the info you send, unless it is redundant in some way, such as including an e-mail address when it will already be listed in your post.  And even at that, an example of what I am talking about is below...

"Hey y'all, e-mail me at johndoe@johndoe.com anytime you like."  will be changed to "Hey y'all, e-mail me at (address above) anytime you like."

...So what you write is at your discretion.  Just please remember that it will be on display for everyone to view.

Re:  Instant Messenger Screen Names:

In my opinion, far and away the most common instant messenger program is AOL Instant Messenger.  I am more than happy to include an icon to where people can IM you direct from the site.  When you submit your info, it is up to you to include your AOL IM screen name.  In addition, there is a check box to make sure you want your screen name listed.  If other screen names from different programs are given, I'll be more than happy to list those as well.  If you don't use an instant messenger program, I recommend you try one out.  They are very convenient, and I personally probably communicate with people via IM that any other method, telephone included.  Programs can be downloaded for free in the Downloads section.

Re:  Telephone numbers:

Some people include their telephone numbers in their listing.  Though I appreciate the extra information to list as it is very generous, phone numbers conform to a different set of global internet guidelines and laws than, say, e-mail addresses do.  For this reason, I choose to not post any personal phone numbers on my site.  It's a long and boring story, but the jest is that there are many more rules and consequently more liability for sites that post personal phone numbers.  There is neither for posting e-mail addresses.  I didn't just pull this site out of my ass y'all.  I am a professionally trained web developer who is very much educated on the rules, laws, and tricks of the trade for something like this.  Consequently, if you would like to provide your phone number to someone, you can do so through your own personal e-mail communication.

Photo Album - Guidelines

The Photo Album is intended to showcase good times had with friends ... nothing more, nothing less.  It serves as a celebration of great friendships, most of which have stood the test of time.  In fact, that is the overall theme for this website.  I care not to have the site focused on me ... past, present, or future.  It has grown way beyond that.  Rather, I want it to focus on the good people around me; the good people I am proud to call friends.  The best way to depict that is through snapshots of fun times we share together.  That being said, the Photo Album will ONLY contain pictures of those whom I consider friends.  In other words, if you and I know each other and yet we are not friends for one reason or another, you will not make it onto the site.  Further, the Photo Album will NOT serve as a window into my private life, nor will it speak to any "labels" (i.e. -- athletic, educational, professional, etc) that I or any of my friends may be known by.  Y'all get a taste of my life in the About Me and Latest News sections.  They more than suffice as windows into my world.  Every other section, Photo Album included, is catered to the ideals and themes mentioned above.  So for future reference, if you ever find yourself wondering why you don't see certain things or certain people on the site, the reason(s) for such decisions have just been described in the words directly above this last sentence.
